Statement on the Passing of Murray Sinclair

We honour and remember Murray Sinclair, former senator and chief commissioner of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, who passed away on November 4, 2024 at 73. His lifelong work for justice and his courage in helping us face the darkest parts of our history have shaped Canada and all of us as educators. His legacy continues to inspire our commitment to Indigenous rights and reconciliation.

Murray Sinclair once said, “Education got us into this mess, and education will get us out of it.” He urged us all to make education a way to heal, understand, and change. Sinclair and his co-chairs of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission spent six years listening to the stories of residential school survivors across Canada. Their final report recorded these stories and gave us the 94 Calls to Action – a guide for building a future of respect and understanding. 

In the Campbell River School District, our Board of Education, district staff, and educational partners are committed to honouring Murray Sinclair’s legacy and the 94 Calls to Action. We work to ensure that Indigenous worldviews and perspectives are reflected in our schools, classrooms, and courses. And we are dedicated to providing a truthful and inclusive education that respects Indigenous history and knowledge and supports ongoing truth and reconciliation.

Murray Sinclair’s legacy is a guiding light, reminding us that education can heal. His voice will continue to resonate within our school district community as we move forward together on this path. To pay further tribute, the Canadian flag at all schools across the district will be lowered to half-mast today, November 5, 2024, and on the day of his memorial service when it is announced.
